Welcome to my website! J A Browne, British Author of the bestselling environmental fantasy series The Earth Chronicles.
I’m a Yorkshire girl. Born in Pudsey (a place famous for its Bear!) and named after my late mother Brenda’s favourite Tudor Queen (“But which?” you ask)! I followed in her footsteps and developed a love of literature, history, animals and the outdoors.
The environment and our natural world is something I’m passionate about. I love trees and have learned so much about them whilst working on The Earth Chronicles series. Climate change is the defining issue of our time and I want to do my part in raising awareness, especially because the young people of this world need the older generations to take responsibility and save this most precious planet of ours.
As a former primary school teacher, I also care deeply about children’s reading. Through reading, children develop their emotional literacy and all within the safety of a book. With children’s reading for fun levels still consistently dropping year on year, I want to be part of the solution to inspire children to pick up a book and lose themselves in stories.
In 2018, I published Hannah and the Hollow Tree the first book in The Earth Chronicles environmental fantasy series and also graduated with an MA in Creative Writing from Leeds Trinity University, where I developed the second book in The Earth Chronicles series, Gaia’s Revenge. I am a proud indie author, like many writers today. This means I can get my books into the hands of readers much faster than facing the long wait going the traditional route. But I have a little help from my wonderful editor Carly and my brilliant book builder Nicola from Peahen Publishing. So if you’ve always wanted to publish your own children’s book and need a little help, I can highly recommend them!
I am also very lucky because… I have the best illustrator in the world. His name is Darran Holmes and if he’s good enough Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings, then he’ll do for me, lol! Darran creates all the exquisite artwork and front covers and he’s my partner in crime helping me bring The Earth Chronicles world to life!
Hollow’s End Part One will now be out in Spring 2021, a slight change on my original plans. But this Autumn/Winter, I have released two new mini novellas as part of The Earth Chronicles main series. Ffen Tales – Thim and the Dozer came out in September followed by FFen Tales – A Winter’s Tale in November.
And the best thing? They are free to anyone who joins my ‘Keep in Touch’ list! I truly believe that now, this year, more than ever, readers of all ages, but especially young readers need some escapism. And where better, but into the magic of nature!
What was your favourite book as a child?
Well, I had many favourites as I grew, but the one that really stands out the most The Ice Palace by is Robert Swindell. It felt so magical and terrifying and exhilarating. I would read Ivan’s story over and over. I highly recommend it!
Who are your favourite authors?
As a child I loved Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis and all the ladybird books. I also love Jane Austen – her level of wit is just superb! I like Shakespeare, particularly The Taming of the Shrew and Matt Haig and so many others the list goes on! I go through phases, I think.
What’s the best thing about being an author?
Well, two things. The first is meeting my readers. It is so much fun discussing my characters with people who have loved and read the books and are intrigued about what is going to happen next with Hannah and all her friends. The second thing, is writing the stories themselves. I love being squirrelled away crafting new scenes and putting my characters in jeopardy so they learn something about themselves and ultimately triumph against dark forces! I would love to be a real superhero, so writing is the next best thing!
